Overview

Joint Base San Antonio – Lackland (JBSA-Lackland) is one of the most important training installations in the United States Air Force. Located in San Antonio, Texas, the base is best known as the home of Air Force Basic Military Training (BMT), where every enlisted Airman begins their journey into military service.

Often referred to as the “Gateway to the Air Force,” Lackland has served as the starting point for millions of Airmen since the early days of the independent Air Force.

Today, JBSA-Lackland is part of Joint Base San Antonio, a consolidation of several major military installations in the San Antonio area that occurred in 2010 under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program.

The base plays a central role in recruit training, technical instruction, security forces education, and military working dog training, making it one of the most active and influential training centers in the U.S. military.

History

Lackland’s roots date back to the early 1940s, when the United States rapidly expanded military training facilities during World War II.

The installation was originally known as San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center, where it trained aviation cadets and pilots for the Army Air Forces.

In 1947, when the United States Air Force became a separate branch of the military, the base was renamed Lackland Air Force Base in honor of Brigadier General Frank D. Lackland, an early Air Force officer who was killed in a plane crash in 1943.

During the Cold War, Lackland became the primary location for Air Force recruit training, a role it still holds today.

In 2010, the base was officially merged into Joint Base San Antonio, joining:

• Fort Sam Houston
• Randolph Air Force Base
• Lackland Air Force Base

Despite the consolidation, the installation is still commonly referred to as Lackland by Air Force veterans and service members.

The Gateway to the Air Force

Basic Military Training (BMT)

Air Force Basic Military Training typically lasts 7.5 weeks and is conducted at Recruit Training Squadrons located on JBSA-Lackland.

Training includes:

• Air Force heritage and traditions
• Drill and ceremony
• Leadership development

Graduation ceremonies take place at Lackland’s parade grounds, where families gather to witness the transformation of recruits into Airmen.

One of the most memorable events during graduation week is the Airman’s Run, when trainees run in formation while family members cheer them on.

Security Forces and Specialized Training

In addition to BMT, Lackland hosts several specialized training programs.

One of the most significant is the Security Forces training pipeline, where Air Force personnel learn to serve as military law enforcement and base defense specialists.

Security Forces training includes instruction in:

These Airmen go on to serve at installations around the world.

Military Working Dog Program

JBSA-Lackland is also home to the Department of Defense Military Working Dog program, one of the most well-known training programs on the installation.

Military working dogs trained at Lackland support missions such as:

• Explosive detection
• Drug detection
• Patrol and security operations
• Combat support missions

These highly trained dogs and their handlers deploy across the globe to support military and law enforcement operations.
